She was initially inspired by shadows cast on grass. A few months later she devised a process which did not make the subject on canvas as an unflat image. The subject instead transforms into a representation of the subject in which the painting transforms into the medium for it's individual interpretation of the subject, particularly when the subjects are living or perishable items like people or fruit. Alexa Meade's painting style, that is a bit ephemeral in the sense that it is amorphous, transparent. The only thing from her work that is preserved is the photo. The painting and the photographic methods are tightly interwoven and result in a flat, two dimensional space, which achieves trompe l'oeil. The third dimension is only visible within certain places like near the eyes, or near hair. At times, Meade integrates her painted models into the 3D world around them, allowing the models to be part of the self-created universe. This is a way of breaking down the barriers between photography, painting installation and performance.
